Emperor Laton the Fourth
Emperor Laton the Fourth was the last living Emperor and head of the House of Thorne. Unable to produce a male heir with his wife, Empress Alavia, there was much concern about the issue of succession as the Emperor grew older. However, there was confidence he could produce an heir, being vigorous even as he grew into middle-age.
His rule was cut short when one of the imperial courtesans, Nemia, poisoned the Emperor. She was convinced her bastard son could make a bid for the throne. It is not known why Nemia believed this – she remained firmly silent during her trial before the Grand Council – but many suspected treachery by one of the noble houses that had intermarried with the Imperial House of Thorne to put up their own sons as a successor.
These events marked the beginning of the events which would lead to the War of the Throne.
